How Not to Write a Novel: 200 Classic Mistakes and How to Avoid Them — Howard Mittlemark and Sandra Newman – Delightfully snarky, this book is full of hilarious examples of how not to write that must have been adapted from Bad!fic. This is a quick read and you are bound to learn a lot.

Robert’s Rules of Writing — Robert Masello –Another quick read full of great information.  All the rules are broken down into short chapters. This book is full of great ideas to jump start and improve your writing.  The nice thing about this book is that it works really well as a reference volume. My copy is well work and full of sticky notes!


Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, Second Edition: How to Edit Yourself Into Print — Renni Browne and Dave King – Buy it, read it and then read it again. This is the best book on writing ever written. It is full of the most excellent advice on improving writing quickly and easily. You will be totally amazed at how your writing changes based on this book–and how you’ll be able to help others with their writing as well. All betas should have Self Editing for Fiction Writers!

The Art of War for Writers: Fiction Writing Strategies, Tactics and Exercises — James Scott Bell – This book is divided up into easy to read, short chunks which makes the information in it easy to absorb and use. The information in this book is concise and will improve your writing.
